Chat Tabs & Filters

Trades in one tab, adverts in none

Right-click the chat to add a tab, then give it filters: messages that include "trade" or "sell" go to your Trades tab, with a background color and a sound if you like. A filter can also hide messages, so the same advert never fills your chat again.

  • Includes or does not include words
  • Hide the message, or give it a background color
  • Play a sound, match case, check the tooltip too
  • Per tab: how many messages to keep
  • Combine repeated messages
  • Keep messages when the server clears the chat

Each tab also has its own text shadow, background and chat trust bar setting.

Right-click, New tab, a rule for "Trade" with a highlight, then the trades arrive
AutoText

One key, one message

Put "gg" on F6 and /spawn on F7, or whatever you type ten times a day. Press the key and it is sent. Pick an AutoText from the interaction menu instead, and {name} becomes the player you clicked, so a /msg always reaches the right person.

  • Any hotkey, combinations of keys too
  • Or the interaction menu: {name} becomes the player
  • Send right away, or only put it into the input
  • Can be limited to one server
  • Servers can turn AutoText off

Name History

See every name a player ever had

An old friend is back under a new name? Open Name History in the chat input, type the name and press Enter. You get every name the player has had, from the current one back to the original, each with the dates it was used.

  • Type a name, press Enter
  • Every name, with dates
  • Also in the interaction menu of a player
  • Needs a connection to Laby Chat

Not in the game right now? laby.net shows the name history of any player under Name History.

Symbols & Emoji

Hearts, stars and emoji in your messages

One button in the chat input opens symbols, emoji, and the color and formatting codes. Click to insert, right-click a symbol to keep it as a favorite. Or type a colon and a few letters, like :jo, and pick the emoji from the list that pops up.

  • Three tabs: Emoji, Symbols, Colors
  • Right-click a symbol to make it a favorite
  • Emoji suggestions while you type, like :joy
  • Emoji show as emoji for other Laby Client players

Color codes only work on servers that allow them. Players without the Laby Client read an emoji as its code, like :joy:.

":jo" suggests 😂, the Emoji tab inserts more
Chat Windows

Your chat, your layout

Drag the chat wherever it suits you and pull its corner to make it bigger. Right-click it, or use its menu button, for a new tab or a whole new window, so private messages can sit in a corner of their own.

  • Move and resize every chat window
  • New tabs and windows from the menu or a right-click
  • Player heads next to messages
  • Emoji shown as images
  • Peek at the chat with a key, without opening it

Chatting with friends rather than the server? The Laby Chat is one conversation in the game, the launcher and the app.

Questions and answers

How do I search the Minecraft chat?

In the Laby Client, open the chat and press Ctrl+F (Cmd+F on a Mac). Type a word and the chat shows only the messages that contain it. Enter jumps to the older hit, Shift+Enter to the newer one, and Esc closes the search. To find something you sent yourself, press Ctrl+R in the chat input instead.

How do I see a player's old names?

Open the chat, choose Name History in the chat input, type the player's name and press Enter. You see every name the player has had, with dates. The lookup needs a connection to Laby Chat. On the web, laby.net shows the name history of every player too.

What is AutoText?

AutoText sends a message or command for you with one key press, like "gg" on F6 or /spawn on F7. You can also pick an AutoText from the interaction menu when you click a player; {name} in the message becomes that player's name. An AutoText can send right away or only fill the chat input, and it can be limited to one server. Servers can turn AutoText off.

Can I put trades or private messages into their own chat tab?

Yes. Right-click the chat or use its menu button to add a tab, then give it a filter: messages that include words like "trade" or "sell" go to that tab. Filters can also hide messages, give them a background color or play a sound.

Can other players see my emoji?

Players who use the Laby Client too see your emoji as emoji. Everyone else reads the code instead, like :joy:.
