Minecraft 1.7 AnimationsBlockhit like it's 1.7 again.
Classic PvP brings back the 1.7 sword, bow and food animations, the smooth sneak and red armor on hits, on 1.8.9 and on new versions. Hold the right mouse button and keep clicking: that is the blockhit.
- Free
- Minecraft 1.8.9 to the latest release
- Windows, macOS and Linux
Block with the sword, not the shield
Since 1.9 you need a shield to block. Turn on Sword/Blocking, keep a shield in your off hand and you block with the sword the 1.7 way, with the shield and its off-hand slot out of sight. On a 1.8 server you join through ViaVersion it works without a shield. Add Blockbuild and the sword keeps swinging while you block: the classic blockhit from the demo above.
- The 1.7 block pose with the sword
- Needs a shield in the off hand, or a 1.8 server with ViaVersion
- Hides the shield and its off-hand slot
- Blockbuild: hit and use an item at the same time
- Players who block show the 1.7 pose in third person too
- Works from 1.8.9 to the latest release
Every Classic PvP setting is off until you turn it on. Servers can switch off the animations and Blockbuild.
Bow, food and fishing rod, held like in 1.7
How you hold things changed after 1.7, and if you learned PvP back then, the new positions feel off. Classic PvP puts them back one by one: the bow while you draw it, food and drinks while you eat, the fishing rod, and with Item Posture every other item in your hand.
- Bow: the 1.7 position while you draw, the old arm swing in third person
- Food: the 1.7 eating and drinking animation
- Fishing Rod: a bit smaller and higher, like in 1.7
- Item Posture: the 1.7 position for every other item
- Each one has a switch of its own
To move and resize held items freely, use Item Appearance.
Switch items without the slow rise
On 1.9 and newer, the item you switch to rises slowly while the attack cooldown charges, and an indicator fills under your crosshair. Item Equip brings back the quick switch of 1.7: the item is up right away, and the attack indicator stays hidden.
- The quick 1.7 switch animation
- No slow rise with the attack cooldown
- Hide Indicator: hides the attack indicator, on by default
- On Minecraft 1.9 and newer
The old sneak, walk and head turn
Sneaking was smoother in 1.7: your camera dips a little and glides back up, where new versions drop it down. Backwards lets your body keep its turn when you walk backwards, the way it did before 1.12. Head Rotation turns other players' heads the quick old way instead of smoothing them out.
- Sneaking: the smooth 1.7 camera, on every version
- Backwards: the body keeps its turn, on 1.12 and newer
- Head Rotation: the old way heads turn, on 1.17 and newer
- Servers can turn off the 1.7 sneak on its own
Red armor on every hit, plain hitboxes
In 1.7, a player you hit turned red from head to toe, armor included. Newer versions leave the armor as it is. Damage brings back the full red flash. Hitbox gives F3+B the old look: just the box, without the red eye box and the blue line that shows where a player looks.
- Damage: armor turns red too, on 1.8.9 to 1.21.1
- Takes your color if you use Hit Color
- Hitbox: no red eye box, no blue look line
- Works with F3+B and the client's own hitbox settings

Hearts that stay calm when you're hit
When you take damage, the hearts you just lost flash white for a moment. With the 1.7 Heart animation they are simply gone; only the outline blinks. In a fight you read your health at a glance instead of through the flicker. The game's own hearts change on Minecraft up to 1.20.1.
- No white flash on the hearts you lose
- The outline still blinks, so you notice the hit
- On Minecraft 1.8.9 to 1.20.1
The survival inventory you grew up with
Old Survival Layout draws your inventory the 1.8 way: no off-hand slot, and the crafting grid back in its old place. Remove Recipe Book takes away the green book button. On 1.8.9, Fix Inventory Position keeps the inventory in the middle of the screen while a potion effect is active.
- Old Survival Layout and Old Creative Layout
- Remove Recipe Book
- Fix Inventory Position on 1.8.9
- Layouts on Minecraft 1.9 and newer
The old layouts need the default resource pack or Programmer Art. Search, locks and previews for the inventory itself come with the Inventory mod.

1.8 hitboxes and slowdown, where servers allow them
Two settings change more than the look, so servers have the last word. Range makes other players' hitboxes as big as in 1.8, so players on 1.8 no longer have an edge over you. Slowdown slows you down the moment you start blocking, like in 1.8. On servers both stay off until the server allows them; in singleplayer you can always use them.
- Range: hitboxes 0.1 blocks bigger on every side, as in 1.8
- Slowdown: you slow down right away when you block
- Both on Minecraft 1.9 and newer
- Off on servers unless the server allows them
- Servers can also turn off the animations and Blockbuild
Server owners control these settings through the Laby server API.

Range and Slowdown at the top of the Classic PvP settings, in singleplayer. On a server that has not allowed them, they carry a lock and the client says: "This feature is disabled by default, but servers can enable it. You can still use it in singleplayer."
Questions and answers
How do I get 1.7 animations on Minecraft 1.8.9?
Install the free Laby Client, open the Mods menu and search for Classic PvP. Every 1.7 animation has a switch of its own: Sword/Blocking, Item Posture, Bow, Food, Fishing Rod, Sneaking, Heart, Damage, Hitbox and more. All of them stay off until you turn them on.
Can I blockhit in Minecraft 1.9 and newer?
Yes. Turn on Sword/Blocking in Classic PvP and keep a shield in your off hand: when you block, you see the 1.7 sword pose instead of the shield. On a 1.8 server joined through ViaVersion it works without a shield. Blockbuild adds the swing while you block.
Are 1.7 animations allowed on servers?
The animations change what you see, and servers keep control: they can turn off the animations, Blockbuild and the 1.7 sneak. Range and Slowdown change more than the look, so they stay off on servers until a server allows them. As always, check the rules of the server you play on.
Does Range give me more reach?
Range makes other players' hitboxes as big as they were in 1.8, 0.1 blocks bigger on every side, so players on new versions don't lose out against players on 1.8. It is off on servers unless the server allows it, and you can use it in singleplayer.
Why doesn't the old inventory layout show up?
Old Survival Layout and Old Creative Layout work on Minecraft 1.9 and newer and need the default resource pack or Programmer Art. With another resource pack the inventory keeps its normal layout.
Which Minecraft versions does Classic PvP work on?
Classic PvP comes with the Laby Client on Minecraft 1.8.9 up to the latest release. A few parts depend on the version: Range, Slowdown, Item Equip and the old layouts need 1.9 or newer, Backwards 1.12 or newer, Head Rotation 1.17 or newer, and Damage works from 1.8.9 to 1.21.1.
