Current mix
Mixing works exactly like in the game: all color channels of the current color and every added dye are summed and averaged, then the result is scaled so its brightest channel matches the average brightness of the inputs.

Everything for perfectly dyed leather armor
Dyeing leather armor in Minecraft mixes dye colors with an averaging algorithm that is hard to predict by hand. This calculator runs the exact in-game formula: combine up to eight dyes per step, re-dye as often as you like, preview the result on a full armor set and copy the matching /give command - or work backwards and find the dye combination for any target color.
Exact in-game algorithm
Colors are mixed with the same average-and-rescale formula Minecraft uses when you combine leather armor and dyes in a crafting grid.
All 16 dyes, unlimited steps
Add up to eight dyes per crafting step and chain as many steps as you want - sequential dyeing unlocks colors a single craft can't reach.
Reverse color search
Pick any target color and the tool finds the dye sequence that gets closest to it, including the remaining color difference.
Full armor preview
See the result on helmet, chestplate, leggings and boots instantly - exactly how the color renders on leather armor in the game.
Ready-to-use /give commands
Copy /give commands with the dyed_color component for Java 1.20.5+ or classic NBT for older versions.
Hex and RGB support
Enter or read exact hex and RGB values at every step - ideal for matching team colors, skins or brand palettes.

Frequently asked questions
- How does dye mixing work in Minecraft?
- Minecraft averages the red, green and blue channels of all applied dyes plus the armor's current color, then rescales the result so its brightness matches the average maximum channel. This tool reproduces that formula bit for bit.
- Can I dye armor any hex color?
- With crafting you can only reach colors that dye combinations can produce - the reverse search finds the closest match. With the /give command any of the 16.7 million RGB colors can be applied directly.
- Which items can be dyed?
- Leather helmet, chestplate (tunic), leggings, boots, leather horse armor and wolf armor can be dyed in Java Edition. All of them use the same color mixing rules.
- How do I remove dye from leather armor?
- Use a cauldron filled with water: right-click the dyed armor on it to wash the color out and restore the default leather brown.
- Does the /give command work on servers?
- Yes, as long as you have operator rights or an equivalent permission. The tool generates the component syntax for Java 1.20.5+ and NBT syntax for older server versions.
- Why do repeated dyeings shift the color?
- Every dyeing step averages the armor's existing color into the mix, so each pass pulls the result toward the newly added dyes. Sequential steps are the key to shades a single craft cannot reach.
