Paste the command into chat or a command block to get the book.
Write books like the game renders them
Write in-game books with colors and formatting that survival book-and-quills can't produce. The editor gives you up to 100 pages with live § color codes, a pixel-accurate book preview, title and author fields, and /give commands that work in Java 1.20.5+ as well as older versions.
Live book preview
Text appears in the real book GUI with Minecraft's font, line wrapping and page size - no surprises in-game.
Full color and formatting
Use all 16 § color codes plus bold, italic, underline, strikethrough and obfuscated - mid-sentence and mid-word.
Up to 100 pages
The in-game maximum: 100 pages with automatic page navigation and per-page character limits.
Title, author, generation
Set the book's title and author and choose the copy generation, exactly like a signed written book.
Commands for every version
Copy /give with the written_book_content component (1.20.5+) or legacy NBT for older Java versions.
Import and continue
Paste an existing book command to load its pages back into the editor and keep writing.
How to create a custom written book
- 1
Write your pages
Type your text page by page and place color and formatting codes with the toolbar - the preview updates live.
- 2
Sign the book
Give the book a title and an author name; both show up on the cover and in the item tooltip.
- 3
Give it in-game
Copy the /give command and run it in chat or a command block - the finished, signed book lands in your inventory.
Frequently asked questions
- How many pages and characters can a book have?
- A written book holds up to 100 pages. Each page fits 14 lines of roughly 19 characters; the editor enforces the same limits as the game so commands never get rejected.
- Can I use colors in a survival book?
- Not by typing - the book-and-quill GUI has no color input. Colored and formatted books require commands, which is exactly what this editor generates for you.
- What do the book generations mean?
- Original, Copy of original, Copy of copy and Tattered indicate how often a book was copied. Copies of copies cannot be copied again in-game.
- Why is my /give command rejected in chat?
- Chat has a 256-character limit; long books exceed it quickly. Run long commands from a command block, which allows up to 32,500 characters.
- Does the editor work for Bedrock Edition?
- The output targets Java Edition syntax. Bedrock stores books differently and doesn't accept these commands, though the text content can of course be reused.
- Can players copy or edit the book in-game?
- A signed written book can be read by everyone and copied in a crafting grid with a book-and-quill, but its text can no longer be edited.
