Anvil cost calculator
Combine books and items step by step and get the exact level cost of every operation, just like the real anvil.
Prior work penalty tracking
The hidden penalty that doubles with every anvil use is tracked per item, so you see when gear approaches 'Too Expensive!'.
Cheapest order finder
Plan the combination order that reaches your target enchantments for the fewest total levels.
Filter and search
Filter by item type or search by name to find the right enchantment in seconds.
How to enchant gear without wasting levels
- 1
Pick your enchantments
Select the item and the enchantments it should end up with - conflicts are flagged immediately.
- 2
Check the anvil plan
The calculator shows each combination step with its level cost, including prior work penalties.
- 3
Combine in the right order
Follow the cheapest order in-game - combining books with books first usually saves many levels.
Frequently asked questions
- Why does the anvil say 'Too Expensive!'?
- Any operation above 39 levels is rejected in survival. The prior work penalty doubles with every anvil use of an item (1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32...), so heavily reworked gear hits the cap - plan the combination order to keep penalties low.
- What is the prior work penalty exactly?
- Each item remembers how often it was used in an anvil. The penalty added to a combination is 2^n - 1 levels per item, where n is its anvil use count - which is why combining two fresh books is cheap and repairing an old sword is not.
- Which enchantments are mutually exclusive?
- The big groups: damage enchantments (Sharpness/Smite/Bane of Arthropods), protections (except Feather Falling), Silk Touch vs. Fortune, Infinity vs. Mending, Loyalty/Channeling vs. Riptide, and Depth Strider vs. Frost Walker.
- How do I get max-level books?
- Enchanting table (up to level 30 enchants), fishing, trading with librarians (the most reliable source for specific max-level books) and structure loot. Two identical books of level n combine into level n+1 at the anvil.
- Does the order of combining matter?
- Massively. Merging books together first and applying the merged book late keeps the expensive item's use count low. The calculator's suggested order routinely saves 10+ levels on a full god-gear build.
- Are treasure enchantments obtainable from the table?
- No - treasure enchantments like Mending, Frost Walker or Soul Speed never appear on the enchanting table. They come from loot chests, fishing, raids or librarian trades only.
