How brewing works

Every recipe starts with Water Bottles in a brewing stand fueled by Blaze Powder. Ingredients are brewed step by step - first Nether Wart, then the effect ingredient, then optional modifiers:

Blaze Powder

Fuels the brewing stand - one piece powers 20 brewing operations.

Nether Wart

Turns a Water Bottle into an Awkward Potion, the base for almost every effect.

Redstone Dust

Extends the potion's duration (long variant).

Glowstone Dust

Amplifies the effect to level II (strong variant), usually halving the duration.

Gunpowder

Converts a potion into a throwable Splash Potion.

Dragon's Breath

Turns a Splash Potion into a Lingering Potion that leaves an effect cloud.

Fermented Spider Eye

Corrupts effects: Swiftness/Leaping become Slowness, Healing/Poison become Harming, Night Vision becomes Invisibility, a Water Bottle becomes Weakness.

Tipped Arrows

Craft 8 Arrows around a Lingering Potion to get Tipped Arrows with its effect.

How to brew potions

  1. 1

    Brew the base

Fill glass bottles with water and brew nether wart into them at a brewing stand - fueled by blaze powder - to get awkward potions.

  2. 2

    Add the effect

Brew the effect ingredient into the awkward potion - sugar for Swiftness, magma cream for Fire Resistance, and so on.

  3. 3

    Modify it

Extend with redstone, amplify with glowstone, make it splash with gunpowder or lingering with dragon's breath.

Frequently asked questions

Why does brewing always start with nether wart?
Nether wart turns water bottles into awkward potions, the neutral base almost all effect ingredients require. The exceptions: fermented spider eye (Weakness) and a few gimmick potions work directly on water bottles.
Can a potion be both extended and amplified?
No - redstone (duration) and glowstone (potency) overwrite each other. A potion is either extended or level II, never both.
How do tipped arrows work?
Craft eight arrows around a lingering potion to get eight tipped arrows with that effect. They apply a shortened version of the effect on hit - and yes, Instant Damage arrows are a thing.
What's the difference between splash and lingering?
Splash potions (gunpowder) apply their effect once on impact in a small radius. Lingering potions (dragon's breath) leave a cloud that keeps applying the effect for several seconds - ideal for area denial and tipped arrow crafting.
Which potions can't be brewed?
Luck and Decay (Bedrock) have no Java brewing recipe, and effects like Levitation exist only via commands - the guide marks unbrewable effects and still gives you their /give commands.
How does the fermented spider eye work?
It corrupts potions into their counterpart: Swiftness becomes Slowness, Healing becomes Harming, Night Vision becomes Invisibility, and on a plain water bottle it brews Weakness.
